Mary Maffeo Panetti, 103, of Augusta, Georgia, and formerly of Windber, Pennsylvania, passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023. She was born in Windber, Pennsylvania on February 15, 1920, a daughter of Louis A. and Elisa Simone Maffeo. Mrs. Panetti graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Johnstown. She was employed at West Penn Hospital as a Nursing Supervisor. She went on to serve her country for 2 years during World War II in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps with the 93rd General Hospital. She also served as 1st Lieutenant with the 19th General Hospital in the European Theater. Part of her service included being stationed across the English Channel treating injured soldiers following the invasion at Normandy. After the war, she worked as a Nursing Supervisor at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She later returned to Windber and worked as a general duty nurse at Windber Hospital. Mary then married Charles G. Panetti and had a daughter, Geriann Panetti Lioi. A faithful caregiver, and years ahead of her time, she helped establish the Windber Hospital Palliative Care and Hospice program. She then served as that program’s coordinator until her retirement. She was devoted to her family. She considered her greatest achievement to be Geriann’s mother and Charlene Revell’s grandmother and great-grandmother to Henry, Letty and Charles. Mary was predeceased by her parents; husband, Charles G. Panetti; her sisters, Vi Zankey, Lillian Summers, and Emma Rebochak; and her brothers, John P. Maffeo and Frank Maffeo. She is survived by her daughter, Geri; granddaughter, Charlene Revell and her husband, Dixon; and great-grandchildren, Henry, Letty and Charles Revell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 10:00am at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, in Windber, Pennsylvania. Family and friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the Mass. At the request of the deceased there will be no visitation. The Interment will be private for the Maffeo and Panetti families at St. Anthony’s Cemetery following the Mass.
