Irvin K. Berkey

Berkey, Irvin K., 91, Windber, passed away May 3, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born January 23, 1930 in Paint Township, son of the late Walter and Lizzie (Statler) Berkey. Preceded in death by brothers, Byron and Clifford; sisters, Geraldine, Leila and infant sister, Flora; sisters in law, Kathryn and Evelyn Berkey. Survived by loving wife of 71 years, Hazel J. (Gehman) Berkey, Windber; sons, Randall and friend Joanne (Rodd), Seattle, WA; Timothy, Pittsburgh; Jeffrey and wife Sherry (Surkosky), Indian Lake, PA; grandchildren, Mary Clare Shulyack, CA; Timothy and husband Chris Riffle, Gilbertsville, NY; Julia,  New York City; Andrew, Pittsburgh; Rachel and friend, Robert Neubauer, Finleyville, PA; Sara and friend, Ben Wright, Washington DC; Jeffrey and wife Melissa (VanBlarcom), Pittsburgh; and Emma Gebhart and husband Doug, Mammoth Lakes, CA; also by 8 great grandchildren. He graduated from Windber High School in 1946 and was a Building Contractor in the Windber Area for 53 years. He was a lifetime member of the Church of the Brethren, was a Deacon and Usher for many years, Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, served on the Property and Finance Council in addition to numerous committees and was Chairman of the Building Committee for the new Berkey Church building in 1969. He served on the Windber Area School Board for 18 years, the Church of the Brethren Home Board for 15 years, and the Paint Township Planning Commission for 27 years. He also was an avid hunter, antique car enthusiast and Pirate baseball fan. Family will receive friends Saturday, May 8th from 2:30 until time of memorial service at 3:00 p.m.  at Berkey Church of the Brethren, Rev. Nathan Crissman, officiating. Inurnment Berkey Cemetery. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Meek & Dalla Valle Funeral Home, Windber. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Berkey Church of the Brethren general fund.
