Berkey, Dennis L., 89, Paint Borough, passed away October, 6, 2021 at home. Born October 21, 1931 to the late Russell and Fannie (Barnhart) Berkey from Paint Borough, PA. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dean and Ron and daughter Beth. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn (Wright) with whom he celebrated 69 years of marriage in June, 2021. Dennis was the father of five children, Dr. Debra Berkey (South Haven, Michigan), Beth, Rev. Gayle Porias (Alexandria, Virginia), Navy Rear Admiral- Retired Richard Berkey(Virginia Beach, Virginia) and Noelle (Paint Borough). He had six grandchildren and three great grandsons. Dennis graduated from Windber High School (1949), Vale Technical Institute (1950) and Penn State University (1958). Postgraduate training included studies leading to certifications as a Professional Land Surveyor, a Professional Engineer, and a Management Specialist. Following the completion of his undergraduate studies focused on electrical engineering, he began his career at Penelec. From 1958 to 1989, he served in many capacities within the company retiring as the Director of Transmission and Distribution Engineering and Operations. A dedicated public servant, Dennis was a longtime member of the Scalp Level & Paint Volunteer Fire Company serving as Treasurer, President, Deputy Chief and Chief.  He was instrumental in the design, engineering and construction of the current fire hall as well as the training of volunteer personnel, updating and purchase of many vehicles and equipment. A member of the Winder Area Water Authority, he held the positions of Secretary and Chairman of the Board.  Dennis has been a member of the Paint Borough Council for over 50 years serving the majority of those years as the President. During his time in office, he was involved in many “firsts” for the borough:  acquisition of a snow plow, backhoe and a police cruiser.  He was also quite involved in street construction projects, installation and update of sanitary sewer and grants and funding to satisfy DEP projects. In addition to his public service, he was active in four area churches during his lifetime:  Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Berkey Church of the Brethren, Trinity Methodist, and the Scalp Level Church of the Brethren.  In each congregation, he served on the council/board of directors and taught Sunday School. In recognition of his lifetime impact of service to others, he was presented several meritorious service awards from the Scalp Level & Paint Volunteer Fire Company.  In 2015, he was awarded a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for his demonstration of “remarkable knowledge, ability, and integrity in carrying out his many responsibilities and tireless devotion to duty.”  Most recently, he was inducted into the Windber Hall of Fame in 2019. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm Friday, October 8, 2021 at Meek & Dalla Valle Funeral Home, Windber and from 10 am until time of service at 11 am Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Scalp Level Church the Brethren.
