John W. Hicks, Sr.

Hicks, John W. Sr., 67, Windber. Passed away after a brave and courageous battle with cancer on Apr. 3, 2018. Born Jul. 12, 1950 in Spangler, PA. Son of Calvin and Peggy (Jenkins) Hicks. Preceded in death by parents, sister Ruth Nisewonger and brothers Mark and David Hicks. Survived by loving wife of 48 years Esther (Chliek) Hicks and these children Tina, wife of George Barner, Windber, Jay Hicks and wife April (Spack), Johnstown, Kristin, wife of Matthew Elias, Johnstown, Joe Hicks and wife Lisa (Breymeier), New Cumberland, Joey Hicks, Windber and Justin Hicks, Johnstown. Grandchildren Samantha Shedlock and fiancé Matt Papinchak, Matthew Barner, Aidan Hicks, Anastasia Choby and Ziva and Raina Hicks. Also brother Raymond Hicks and wife Carrie, Penn Run, PA and numerous nieces and nephews. Member at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Windber. Longtime coach of the Windber Little League and also coached flag football. Coal Miner for over 35 years, retiring as mine foreman. He delivered meals on wheels. John was a lieutenant in the 54^th Pennsylvania Company A, Civil War reenacting. He enjoyed traveling and participating in Civil War reenactments throughout the year with his family. John organized Civil War living histories throughout numerous schools and communities. He will be sadly missed by his family. Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm Friday at Meek & Dalla Valle Funeral Home Inc., Windber. Funeral service will be at 11am Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Windber. Pastor Ruth Jensen, officiating. Interment Richland Cemetery.
