Shaffer, Wilbur, “Brof,” 94, Windber. Passed away Feb. 7, 2017 at Meadow View Nursing Care Center, Berlin. Born May 27, 1922 in Windber. Son of Elmer and Lizzie (Knavel) Shaffer. Preceded in death by parents, wife Helen (Taylor), grandson Matthew Shaffer and siblings Geraldine Taylor and Gerald Shaffer. Survived by companion Helen Hritz and these children Becky, wife of John Shontofski, Stoystown, Ed and wife Karen, Mundy’s Corner, Gary, and wife Theresa, Denmark. Grandchildren Carly and Nathan Shontofski, Tonya, wife of Brian Lightcap, Kayla Shaffer, Jenna, wife of Jeff Russell, Michael, Hannah, and Amanda Shaffer. Great-grandchildren Jakob, Lukas, Edith and Brooke. Member Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Windber, Windber Moose Lodge 349 and Windber VFW Post 4795. Retired after 25 years from the PA Dept. of Transportation, where he was superintendent on the turnpike. Army veteran WWII, where he served as Sgt. in the Western Pacific with the 147 Infantry. Avid fisherman. “Brof” took many trips to Alaska. He enjoyed camping, hunting, playing cards and spending time at his cottage that he built. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 10 am until time of service at 11 am Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Windber. Pastor Ruth Jensen, officiating. Interment Rummel Cemetery. Military graveside rites by Windber VFW Post 4795.
