Geraldine Berkey

Berkey, Geraldine “Jerry”, 96 Windber died Sept. 27, 2016 at the Church of the Brethren Home.  Born March 10, 1920 in Paint Twp., daughter of the late Walter I. and Lizzie (Statler) Berkey.  Also preceded in death by brothers Byron and Clifford. Survived by sister Leila Berkey, Pittsburgh, and brother Irvin and wife Hazel (Gehman) Berkey, Windber, sisters-in-law Evelyn Berkey, Gilbert AZ,, and Kathryn Berkey, Denton, MD.  Also survived by one niece, seven nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, as well as great, great nieces and nephews.  “Jerry” was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren and for many years attended the Moxham Church of the Brethren where she served on various commissions and committees and was a faithful choir member.  She was a 1937 graduate of Windber High School. After graduating she attended Hammond School of Beauty and worked for 53 years at Wanda’s House of Beauty in Johnstown.  She was an accomplished artist, having been taught by Mrs. Harris, was a member of the Allied Artists of Johnstown and entered her paintings in the art shows. She also spent numerous hours knitting wonderful things for her sister and brother Irvin and wife Hazel who were a continual support throughout her life. She volunteered for many years in the beauty shop and sewing room and the Brethren Home. On April 14, 2002 the United Churches of Windber Area gave her the “Outstanding Citizen Award” for donating over 12 gallons of blood. Thanks to Dr. Bencie and the staff of the Church of the Brethren Home, especially the staff on 2^nd Station for the wonderful care she was given.  There will be no viewing or visitation.  Committal  service will be held at the convenience of the family in Berkey Cemetery.
